Simple Present – Present Progressive

Simple Present
This tense is usually not used to indicate present time. However, it is used to indicate present time (now) with the following stative verbs.

Present Progressive
Subject + (am, is, are) + [verb + ing]


Simple Present Present Progressive
infinitive
(3rd person singular: infinitive + 's')
I speak
you speak
he / she / it speaks
we speak
they speak form of 'be' and verb + ing

I am speaking
you are speaking
he / she / it is speaking
we are speaking
they are speaking

Exercises :
1. Something (smell) very good.
Answer : smells
2. We (eat) dinner at seven o’clock tonight.
Answer : are eating
3. He (practice) the piano every day.
Answer : practices
4. They (drive) to school tomorrow.
Answer : are driving
5. I (believe) you.
Answer : believe
6. Maria (have) a cold.
Answer : has
7. Jorge (swim) right now.
Answer : is swimming
8. John (hate) smoke
Answer : hates
9. Jill always (get) up at 6.00 A.M.
Answer : gets
10. Jerry (mow) the lawn now.
Answer : is mowing

Simple Past Tense – Past Progressive (continous)

Simple Past Tense
The simple past is used for a completed action that happened at one spesific time in the past. The italicized words are important because they show that simple past is not the same as past progressive or present perfect

Past Progressive
Subject + (was, were) + [verb + ing]

The past progressive is used to indicate
1. An action which was occuring in the past and was interrupted by another action
When + subject1 + simple past tense + subject2 + past progressive
or
subject1 + past progressive + when + subject2 + simple past tense
2. Two actions occuring at the same time in the past
subject1 + past progressive + while + subject2 + past progressive
or
while + subject1 + past progressive + subject2 + past progressive

Exercises :.
1. Gene (eat) dinner when his friend called.
Answer : was eating
2. While Maria was cleaning the apartment, her husband (sleep).
Answer : was sleeping
3. At three o’clock this morning. Eleanor (study).
Answer : was studying
4. When Mark arrived, the Johnsons (have) dinner, but they stopped in order to talk him.
Answer : were having
5. John (go) to France last year.
Answer : went
6. When the teacher (enter) the room, the students were talking.
Answer : entered
7. While joan was writing the report, Henry (look) for more information.
Answer : was looking
8. We (see) this movie last night.
Answer : saw
9. At one time, Mr. Roberts (own) this building.
Answer : owned
10. Jose (write) a letter to his family when his pencil (break).
Answer : was writing, broke

Present Perfect Tense – Present Perfect Progressive (continous)

Present Perfect
Subject + (has, have) + [verb in past participle]

Present Perfect Progressive
Subject + (has, have) + been + [verb + ing]

2. Bob (see) this movie before.
Answer : has seen
3. Jorge (read) the newspaper already.
Answer : has read
4. Mr. Johnson (work) in the same place for thirty-five years.
Answer : has works

Answer : haven’t begun
6. George (go) to the store at ten o’clock this morning.
Answer : went
7. Joan (travel) around the world.
Answer : has traveled
8. Betty (write) a letter last night.
Answer : wrote
9. Guillermo (call) his employer yesterday.
Answer : called
10. We (see; negative) this movie yet.
Answer : haven’t seen
